BABY-PROOFING YOUR HOME

 

When you first realized that you were pregnant, you know that your life would never be the same. The panic set in when you realize you have a million things to  do. Hopefully, right at the top of your list is making your home safe for you baby.

 

Unfortunately, in many cases, the importance of child proofing is apparent only after a child has been injured. While there is no substitute for your close attention, it is of utmost importance to prepare your home for the safe arrival of your child. The list below will help you to take this necessary step.

 

THE LIVING ROOM:

 

We call them 'living room' for a reason: We all spend lots of time there.

 

Be on the lookout for choking hazards. Anything smaller than 1.68 inches in diameter- such as coins, deflated balloons and balloon parts, marbles, small toys, and nail scissors- is a choking hazard. If an object fits inside a toilet paper tube, it is small enough to pose a danger.

 

Use a fireplace screen even when fireplace is not in use, and remember to clean chimneys every year. (Product: Fireplace Screen)

 

Patch furniture edges with cushioning materials. (Product: Corner Cushions)

 

Prevent toppling by keeping TVs and other heavy furniture and electronics on a stable surface far back and against a wall. (Product: Furniture Strap)

 

Keep electrical cords out of reach by taping them to baseboards or running them under furniture - never under carpets

 

Watch out for slippery floors. Wearing shoes or slip-resistant socks in the house will help prevent falls as floors can be very slippery- even when dry. (Product: Non-slip Socks)

 

Keep all electrical outlets covered (Products: Outlet covers)

 

It is a wise idea to get protective door knobs for the front door or any door leading to dangerous areas that you would not like your child to enter. (Product: Door Knobs)

 

HANDS AND KNEES CHECK: Go down on your hands and knees and crawl through each room in your house to see it through the eyes of your child. Look under every furniture for sharp objects by which your child could be injured or small objects that could be easily swallowed. Keep the floors clean and dry at all times and safeguard against slippery floors by making sure your child wears shoes or slip-resistant socks.

KITCHEN:

Make sure to install oven lock, stove knobs and oven guard.

 

Keep cleaning products, cigarettes, medicine, vitamins, knives, sharp items and garbage bags locked away and out of the reach of children (Product: Cabinet locks)

 

Cook food on back burners of the stove with pot handles turned to the back.

 

BATHROOM:

 

Be sure to place non-skid mat in the bathtub and on the floor. (Product: Non-slip Bathtub Mat) 

 

 Medicines, sharp objects and personal products should be stored out of the reach of children. (Product: Cabinet Locks)

 

 Electrical appliances must be unplugged and out of the reach of children.(Product: Outlet covers)

 

Test bathwater before bathing your child. (Product: Bath thermometer)

 

Keep toile lid closed when not in use. (Product: Toilet lid lock)

 

Do not use toilet bowl disinfectants that stay in the tank.

 

Invest in spout head covers to protect your child from head injuries while bathing. (Product: Spout Covers)

 

HALLWAYS AND STAIRS:

 

Install safety gates and the top and bottom of stairs. (Product: Gates

 

Place nightlights in all of the hallways.

 

Be sure that stair rugs and carpeting are tacked down 

 

BASEMENT:

 

Secure handrails on both sides of the stairways.

 

Hot water heater should be set at no more than 49 degrees celsius or 120 degrees fahrenheit.

GARAGE:

 

Garage door openers should be reach of out of children.

 

Lawnmowers and snow blowers stored safely.

 

Keep all chemicals and cleaning products out of reach.

 

WINDOWS:

 

Install window guards. They have bar spaced no more than 10cm (4in)   apart. (Product: Window Guards)
